DTG or direct to garment printing is sometimes referred to as just-in-time or full color print. It’s a relatively new printing method that prints directly onto a garment or fabric through what is essentially a modified version of a traditional inkjet printer. It’s like a regular inkjet printer which has been modified to “accept” garments instead of paper. The ink is printed directly onto fabric which results in exceptional softness or “hand” and offers more printing flexibility than screen printing. The color variation is great and the turn-around time is much shorter (especially for smaller orders).

When it first appeared in the market it was originally for light garments only because white ink was not available. As the technology has advanced, DTG printing providers are adding dark garments as an option.

This is perfect for printing a full color photograph, personalized gift or that gag shirt for a friend. The art requirements for our DTG printer aren’t as strict as screen printing. We can print from bitmaps and jpegs on occasion.

Not all garments are a good fit for the DTG printer. Because it sprays the ink on a “low pile” shirt/ garment is best. We can recommend a few but our favorite is the Gildan 2000 and 5000.

DTG printing is not for every job but it certainly opens the door for small quantity jobs and many colors at cost effective prices. Durability is comparable to screen printing because of it’s heat sealed finish.

So you have artwork? That’s a start! Did you know that there are different types of art files? Some are useable for printing and some are not. The best type of file is called a “Vector” file while others are classified as “Raster” files.

Vector files are stored as mathematical expressions of lines and curves.  What does this mean exactly? Well, it means that your file will be able to be resized without loss of image quality (resolution), re-colored easily, altered, arranged or manipulated in various ways.

Raster files consist of tiny pixels or dots and are based in certain color modes. When raster files are resized this changes the image quality, or resolution.

We prefer to print from Vector files.

Vector formats typically end in .ai .pdf and .eps.  However, this does not guarantee that your file is vector.  Raster images can be saved as these file types but that does not mean they are truly vector.

Raster file types end in .jpeg .psd .tif .gif and many others.

If you have a question as to whether your file is vector or raster please send it our way and we can let you know!

What’s better than a great birthday party? How about a souvenir t-shirt? That’s what we created for Bobber the Clown. They provided a high-res photo that we vectorized and adjusted to black with gradients. Brenda was so pleased when we were able to find a spot for her website without adding a new print location. These shirts are ready to party!

Corey’s Father, at 70, has been running marathons for more than 30 years, and so Corey knew that for his participation in the St. George marathon, the whole family was going to need something special. We used a Sport Tek shirt, , in five different sizes, with the logo emblazoned on the front and the back, and added “support crew” to the shirts for the family. The adult and youth sizes were screen printed, but the toddler size had to be digitally printed in time for the entire family to attend the St. George Marathon!

This youth group from New York contacted us to create their shirts for their adventure. We worked via email to create the design and get it laid out just so. This was another shirt that was perfect for digital printing. The timeline was short and there were several colors. They chose the burnt orange color which is perfect when camping and getting dirty. The boys loved their shirts and had a great time!

Mike came to us this summer looking for unique shirts for his Boy Scout troop’s summer adventure trip. He had a basic idea of what he wanted as well as a limited budget. We worked with him throughout the entire process to ensure that he and his boys would get maximum design at a minimal price. When completed the shirts looked amazing and Mike was kind enough to send us some pictures so we could see our shirts in action.

He came to us with this idea, but budget wise it didn’t fit the bill. We worked up a design that was one color and center chest rather than an overprint.

Working in dirt, grease, paint, and heat can wreak havoc on your employees clothing. How can you keep a professional look but make sure your crew is safe and their uniforms will last? This is the dilemma we have when outfitting most people in industrial and manufacturing fields. Recently our client MetaDesigns approached us with this issue. They were concerned about look and durablility. Working with our supplier of Dickie’s brand apparel we were able to find an appropriate work shirt. These shirts were ordered for their shop workers while basic tees were ordered for other employees to help keep costs down.

Maryann asked us to create some aprons to help keep her crew clean while cooking breakfast at the Wasatch Front Farmers Market. She chose a red apron to help hide the dirt and we printed her logo in sky blue. The aprons turned out great and her crew is staying clean!

Here’s one of the shirts we did for the Ragnar Wasatch Back this year. This team came to us with their great design that needed just a couple of tweaks. This was an all female team so they chose Augusta’s 1015 for ladies. They also wanted hoodies as well. We choose the light weight Independent hoodie in red. These were screen printed. The shirt is 3 color front, 3 color back. The hoodie is one color, left chest.

What our customer said about us:
“You are a super star! The team was thrilled with the tees and hoodies. And oh my gosh, everywhere we went people were stopping us to compliment the cuteness of those shirts. I almost wish we had some sort of giveaway we could’ve handed out like a pen or something. My non running friends were wishing they had bought shirts too.”
— Clisty Barzoni

The students at East Hollywood High gave us a call about printing these vibrant shirts. When we took a look at the art we knew this was a perfect job for digital printing (also known as DTG or Direct to Garment).  The combination of many colors, shading, gradients and low quantity of shirts is the DTG qualifier. What a great way to celebrate the end of a great year!

The guys from Bloxx contacted us about getting shirts made for an upcoming strongman competition. They sent their logo over and we put it center chest and center back. These shirts were created in 2XL and 3XL sizes so we went pretty big with the logo. We used 4 colors on this logo as well as halftones to get the right effect.

A young Soccer team contacted us about personalizing a hoodie for their coach as a big Thank You!
We were happy to oblige. We used heat applied vinyl for this job. I don’t think Coach Glen will be cold or mistaken for any other coach on the field.

This team contacted us to create a shirt for their Dash for Donation 5k run sponsored by Yes Utah! They wanted something that illustrated the name of their team “Kidney Beings”. This simple design says it all. They wanted ladies shirts as well as men’s so we picked the Gildan 2000L and 5000.

Here’s another shirt for a Ragnar relay team. They came to us with a great design. This was a female and male team so they chose Sport Tek Dry Zone Silver in Ladies and Men’s sizes. We again used heat applied vinyl for the tech shirt as it is long lasting.

One of the teams running the Wasatch Back Relay contacted us for some “tech” shirts. This team is all girl and the shirt had to be the same. They chose the Augusta Sportswear 1015 (wicking/antimicrobial jersey) in purple. They had a design concept but asked us to pull it all together for them. We used a heat applied vinyl for this shirt in three locations. It lasts longer than screen printing would on this type of shirt and looks/feels great.

The Agile Roots Conference team requested shirts for their conference. We went with the Gildan 2000 in Sand for the attendees. We printed the year on the front, center chest and the logo on the back, off-centered. They also wanted to set apart those working and presenting at the conference from the attendees so we embroidered some women’s and men’s polos for them as well.

We got a call from parents of the Davis County Youth Hockey League for some hockey coach’s gifts. They requested a long sleeve “technical” (or moisture wicking) shirt so we chose the Sport Tek Dry Zone Raglan. They wanted a nice hat without hook and loop. We chose the Port Authority 2nd Generation Flex Cap. We embroidered the DC Wind logo center chest on the shirts and on the front of the hats.

Job Specs:
20 hats and 20 shirts

The team from Mountain West Ruby Conference contacted us for some “not-so conference” looking shirts. People are even wearing them after the conference and not for just yard work. They really like the look and feel of the American Apparel brand but weren’t looking to spend that kind of money if they didn’t need to. We suggested one of our favorites: Alstyle. They liked the more form fitting shirt so we went with the Alstyle 5301 in charcoal. They had some pieces of their art already created. We added the vintage look and the touches for the Fabulous 4 on the front. At first they ordered 300 shirts and found the night before the conference they needed additional shirts. We quickly printed some extras we had (18 to be exact) and delivered them the morning of the conference. Everything came together great!

She wanted them for her premier party for “The Lightning Thief.” We ordered youth and adult shirts from Alstyle (1701 and 3381) in orange. Because this was a low quantity job with a fairly simple design, we chose heat applied vinyl.  We delivered them Friday morning in plenty of time for their premier party.

A local indoor soccer team contacted us for some jerseys. They didn’t have any art and wanted some help. Because they wanted standard jerseys we went with a nice, clean font. We put the team name “Awesome Sauce” across the front and the players name across the shoulders and their number on the back. We added their sponsor’s logo on the sleeve. They chose the Adult Cascade Soccer Jersey in a nice blue and wanted white printing.
